Our House

A small workshop, run the old way

Hanzi Bridge began in a third-floor walk-up on Bonham Strand in the winter of 1998, one desk, one kettle, and a great many dictionaries.

We were founded by Grace Lam, a court interpreter who grew tired of watching contracts fall apart over a single mistranslated clause. Her idea was unfashionable even then: that a translation is a piece of craftsmanship, that the person who did the work should put their name to it, and that a client should always be able to telephone the human being responsible. Twenty-six years later, that is still exactly how the house is run.

We are deliberately small. Nine full-time linguists work from the studio in Sheung Wan, with a trusted circle of specialist freelancers in Guangzhou, Taipei and Macau for the harder pairs. Every document that leaves us has been drafted by one translator and independently reviewed by a second, a four-eyes rule we have never relaxed, not for a rush job and not for a regular client.

Our work sits mostly in three worlds: the legal (statements of claim, affidavits, company records for the Companies Registry), the commercial (tender documents, shipping paperwork, patent abstracts for firms trading up the Pearl River Delta), and the personal (birth and marriage certificates, academic transcripts, immigration bundles for families moving between Hong Kong, the Mainland and abroad).

“A good translation should be invisible. The reader forgets it was ever written in another tongue.”

We are not a software portal and we do not run your papers through a machine and post the result. When you send us a document, a real person reads it, asks the awkward questions early, and tells you honestly whether the deadline you want is the deadline you will get.

What We Do

Services & indicative rates

Rates are in Hong Kong dollars and give an honest starting point. Certified, legal and technical work is quoted per document once we have seen the source, because a two-page affidavit can be heavier going than a ten-page brochure.

Document Translation

General and business documents between Chinese and English: correspondence, reports, brochures, websites and marketing copy. Turnaround for a standard bundle is two to three working days.

from HK$1.10per source word

Certified & Notarised Translation

Certificates, transcripts, company records and legal instruments, stamped and signed for acceptance by Hong Kong courts, the Immigration Department, universities and consulates. Notary and apostille liaison arranged on request.

from HK$420per certificate

Legal & Contract Translation

Pleadings, contracts, patents, arbitration bundles and due-diligence packs, handled by linguists with a paralegal background and reviewed against the source terminology. Confidentiality undertakings signed as standard.

from HK$1.60per source word

Interpreting

Consecutive and simultaneous interpreting for meetings, mediations, factory visits and court hearings across Hong Kong, Shenzhen and the wider delta. Cantonese, Mandarin and English, half-day and full-day bookings.

from HK$3,800per half day

Transcreation & Localisation

For campaigns, apps and packaging where a literal rendering would fall flat. We adapt tone, idiom and cultural reference so the copy reads as though it were written in the target market, not merely converted into it.

Proofreading & Editing

A second, independent pair of eyes on a translation you already hold: accuracy, consistency, register and typesetting in both Traditional and Simplified script. Ideal before a filing or a print run.

from HK$0.55per word

Working Languages

The pairs we keep in-house

These directions are handled by our own salaried linguists, with sworn review. Pairs beyond this list are covered through our vetted delta network; ask us and we will tell you plainly whether we are the right house for the job.

English Traditional Chinese
Our core direction, for the Hong Kong and Taiwan reading market. Court and Companies Registry ready.
English Simplified Chinese
For Mainland filings, contracts and marketing. Mainland-standard terminology and conventions.
Traditional Simplified
Script conversion done properly: not a font swap, but a full terminology and idiom review.
Cantonese English
Spoken interpreting and transcription, including colloquial and legal Cantonese for hearings.
Portuguese Chinese
Chiefly for Macau: notarial deeds, gaming-sector paperwork and civil documents.
Japanese & Korean Chinese
Through our delta network, for trade, tourism and manufacturing clients. Reviewed in-house.

How It Works

From your desk to a signed page

Send the source

Email the document or bring it to Bonham Strand. We tell you the same day whether it is straightforward or needs care.

Written quote

A fixed price and a firm deadline in writing, with the named linguist assigned to your file. No hourly surprises.

Draft & review

One translator drafts, a second reviews against the source. Awkward terms are queried with you, never guessed.

Certify & deliver

Stamped, signed and delivered in the format you need, digital, printed, or lodged with the notary on your behalf.

The People

Linguists who sign their work

You will always know who translated your document and who reviewed it. Here are four of the people you are most likely to speak with.

Grace Lam

Founder & Principal

Court interpreter turned founder. Leads the legal desk and reviews every certified file that leaves the house.

Desmond Yau

Senior Legal Translator

Ex-paralegal. Handles contracts, pleadings and patent work between English and both Chinese scripts.

Priscilla Ho

Lead Interpreter

Simultaneous and consecutive interpreting in Cantonese, Mandarin and English for hearings and boardrooms.

Marcus Chan

Client Coordinator

Your first call. Manages quotes, deadlines and notary liaison so your file never stalls between hands.

In Their Words

What our clients tell us

They caught a mistranslated clause in the counterparty's draft that everyone else had read straight past. That one line saved the deal.

Angela TsangCorporate solicitor, Central · 2 months ago

We had marriage and birth certificates translated for an immigration bundle. Certified, accepted first time, and done a day before they promised.

Ronald FungPrivate client, Kennedy Town · 5 months ago

Reliable interpreting for our Shenzhen factory visits over three years now. Priscilla knows the trade terms cold, which is half the battle.
